Maisie was one of a colony of cats living in the grounds of a factory in Kilsyth, Lanarkshire. When I first heard of the colony I was told by the kind person feeding them that two litters had recently been born. One litter was aged around 7 – 8 weeks old and eating solid food at the time and the others were newborn. Both litters had been moved by their mothers and, given the terrain and situation at the factory, proved very difficult to track down. I caught Maisie reasonably quickly but it was obvious that she was the mother of the newborn kittens as she was so heavily milk-laden so I had to let her go again. Only one of her babies was ever found but she was in a very poorly state and lived for only another ten days. Maisie was being seen so often that it became obvious that the rest of her babies must have died. In the meantime, over a period of weeks we managed to catch all of the adults for neutering and all of the older kittens. We (myself and their feeder, who was an incredible help) were determined that Maisie would never go though that again but Maisie was determined too! She had been caught in the trap before and wasn’t going near it again. It took almost another three months to catch her and by that time she was pregnant again. She gave birth to five kittens in our care.
Despite never having been handled, Maisie has been an absolute darling. Never once did she prevent me handling her kittens, never once tried to scratch or bite. Even when she had runny eyes for a while she allowed me to clean her eyes and put cream in them. Four of Maisie’s kittens have now been homed, all having had homes lined up before even going on to this site, with only little Jake remaining. Now that she has only the one kitten left, Maisie hardly leaves his side and is forever polishing him to perfection. It would be just wonderful if this lovely girl could find a home where both she and her little son would be welcome. Access to a safe outdoor area once she was settled would be just perfect for them both.
