Of the five cats brought in from a farm recently, three young adults and two kittens, Kim is probably the shyest. Being so close to little Hilary, Hilary has picked up on Kim’s shyness and tends to follow her lead. It’s a pity Hilary hasn’t followed her mum Gracie’s lead instead as Gracie is now at the stage where she’s just about ready to roll over and let me tickle her tummy. Having said that, Kim lets me stroke her too a result, possibly, of watching Gracie happily allow me to make a great fuss of her. When I’m fussing over Gracie I place my other hand on Kim’s paws and gently begin to stroke her legs. I can put my fingers right up to her mouth and touch her face and she neither runs away nor tries in any way to scratch me or bite me, despite all her initial fear. Shy cats like Kim do very well when they get the right people i.e. people who let the cat dictate the pace and don’t ever force anything on them. Even cats brought up in a domestic situation will often find a place to hide away when they first go on to a new home and that’s totally to be expected: everything has changed for re-allocated cats after all. There’s new people, new smells, a whole new environment to get used to with all that was known before now gone. That’s a scary position to be in for anyone, but especially for the shy, be they humans or animals. It just takes understanding and some time and patience to make it all come right. Having done this work now for 25 years, I’ve come to recognise which cats really don’t want to be domesticated and which are just shy and confused and in need of  that chance to show how well they will fit into a domestic situation. Are YOU the right sort of person for gentle but timid little souls like Kim? She awaits your call…..
